This project was designed as the gateway to Montpelier, the capital of Vermont. It responds to the dynamic site by opening itself to the community with large areas of glazing on the sides with the most traffic. It acknowledges the community’s relationship to water through the use of reflecting pools along the circulation into the building, and providing strategic viewing points that encourage the visitor to more consciously consider the Winooski river which flows alongside the site. It elevates the existing historical buildings of downtown Montpelier, taking inspiration from their forms but setting itself apart, at night becoming a glowing beacon of community to welcome visitors.
